'Zenki/Pre-facelift'
In the beginning of 1988 Mitsubishi continued its tradition of entering rally events with the release of the 'light weight' and 'no frills' RS. The RS has generally always been associated with the E38A chassis platform without 4WS, however the RS models used by the works rally teams were indeed E39As with 4WS. That being said only the E38A RS was sold to the general public and small-time rally teams.

'Zenki/Pre-facelift'
With the Japanese introduction of the 6th generation Galant in September 1987 came the first ever Galant VR-4, completing the V-series model range (VZ, VX & VR-4). Initially available for the first two years in one spec level producing 205PS and 294Nm of torque from the 2.0L DOHC 16V engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

August 1988 saw the introduction of the hatch-back bodied variant of the Galant VR-4 - dubbed the Eterna ZR-4. With the Eterna came a sleeker lower roof line, more raked windscreen and of course the addition of a large glass hatch adding a great deal of interior space and cargo flexibility. The specifications remain the same for the same year Galant VR-4 apart from the additional weight of approx 70kgs.

'Chuuki/Facelift'
An update to the model line up came in October 1989 with some visual changes to the grille, alloy wheels, boot-lid spoiler, all lamps and interior. Most importantly there was an increase of power to 220PS while torque remained the same at 294Nm. Unique to the E38A RS was also the change to the close ratio transmission and 3.909 rear axle ratio.

'Chuuki/Facelift'
Like the E38A, the E39A with 4WS also received the face-lifted update in October 1989. For the first time an automatic transmission version of the E39A Galant VR-4 and Eterna ZR-4 was released. Mitsubishi opted for a smaller TD04 turbocharger on the automatic models to boost low and mid-range response while delivering a slightly lower 210PS and the same 294Nm of torque.

The beginning of 1990 saw the introduction of the Galant 'Super' VR-4 - a luxurious version with black leather interior, body coloured rims and a CD player as standard equipment. Available in both manual or automatic in one colour only - 'Lamp Black'.

'Kouki/2nd Facelift'
A change in FIA regulations in 1990 enabled the Mitsubishi works rally team to run with an upgraded vehicle so long as a certain number of road-going vehicles were manufactured to meet the homologation requirements. This special version was appropriately named 'Evolution' and produces the highest output of the entire range at 240PS and 304Nm of torque thanks to an enlarged turbo, intercooler and injectors. The same close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission of the earlier 'chuuki' RS remained. The Evolution can be instantly recognised by its new vented bonnet and extra vents below the grille in the front bumper.

'Kouki/2nd Facelift'
With the second and final revision of the Galant VR-4 and Eterna ZR-4 being released in August 1990, the 5-speed manual transmission variants benefitted from the Evolution specifications of the RS of the same period, in order to meet the homologation rules. A new addition to the line up is the Galant VR-4 Monte Carlo Edition - a model to commemorate success in the Rally of Monte Carlo stages. Like the Super VR-4, the Monte Carlo was available in Black only with body coloured rims, with a factory standard sun-roof as an addition. All 4-speed automatic vehicles retained the earlier specifications.
